The imposing fortress of Sarzanello, on the eastern borders of Liguria, finished at the beginning of the 16th century on the top of a hill from which it dominates the surrounding territory for a large stretch, and in particular the city of Sarzana below, constitutes the "hinge", the fundamental point of passage between two periods in the history of fortification. In fact, it brings together the characteristic forms of the so-called "transition age", prefiguring at the same time the future solutions, which will be realized in a few years with the construction of the first bastioned architecture by Sangallo or Sanmicheli.
