The Icefields Parkway

The Icefields Parkway, also known as Highway 93, is a world-renowned scenic drive located in the Canadian Rockies.

Stretching for about 144 miles (232 km), this highway takes you on a journey from Lake Louise in Banff National Park to the town of Jasper in Jasper National Park. This route in Alberta is a haven for nature enthusiasts and road-trippers alike, offering a multitude of opportunities to connect with the great outdoors.

As you traverse the Icefields Parkway, you’re treated to a visual spectacle of over 100 ancient glaciers, glistening alpine lakes like Peyto Lake and Bow Lake, and towering mountain peaks. It’s a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise too; it’s not uncommon to spot animals like elk, mountain goats, or even bears if you’re lucky.

Hiking opportunities abound along this route. Some of the trails lead you to vantage points that allow you to get up close and personal with some of the glaciers.

For a different kind of experience, the Glacier Skywalk near the Athabasca Glacier offers a unique view from a glass-floored observation platform suspended 918 feet (280 meters) above the Sunwapta Valley.

Given its location in the high mountains, it’s essential to check road conditions, especially if you plan to travel during the off-season. Snow and ice can make the journey treacherous, and some facilities may be closed.

To truly appreciate the beauty along this scenic drive, it’s advisable to take your time. There are several visitor centers and pullouts along the way where you can learn more about the area’s geology, flora, and fauna.

So, pack some snacks, fill up your gas tank, and get your camera ready for one of the most breathtaking drives you’ll ever experience.
