The Hot Water Springs of Mahaoya

Shrouded in legends about their origin and mythical healing powers, the seven hot springs of Mahaoya attracted travelers who flocked to Ampara after the end of the 30-year war.Located about 2 km from Mahaoya town, these springs are considered the hottest of all hot springs in Sri Lanka. The temperature of the hottest spring is about 56°C. Each spring is surrounded by a stone wall that forms seven individual wells, which are in turn covered by a wall to provide privacy for those who bathe. The size of each well varies. The bottom of the wells is composed of quartz, sand and gravel, making the water clear and non-muddy. The temperature of each well varies, and because of its mineral composition, the water is said to cure skin ailments and arthritis. The best time to visit the springs is at dawn or dusk, when it is quiet and the sounds of the night create a calming effect.
