The giant fork of Vevey

On the picturesque lakefront of Vevey, one of the most charming towns on the shores of Lake Geneva, stands an unusual wonder that captures the imagination of visitors. It is the giant fork, a monumental work of art that attracts the attention of those walking along the waterfront. With its imposing size, this extraordinary stainless steel sculpture is an iconic landmark and a must-see during a visit to Vevey. The artwork, known as "La Fourchette" (the Fork), was conceived by the talented visual artist Jean-Pierre Zaugg, a native of Neuchâtel. This master of art has created a stainless steel fork weighing an imposing 450 kilograms, which stands majestically 8 meters high. The work is 1.3 meters wide at the base of the tine tips. Commissioned to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Alimentarium, Vevey’s famous food museum, the fork has become a unique symbol reflecting the importance of the region’s culinary and gastronomic culture.A troubled odyssey:The fork went through a path not without obstacles before finding its current location. After its official unveiling in September 2009, the sculpture caused a sensation in the art world, earning a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s tallest fork. However, not everyone saw this monumental work of art in a good light. In 1996, the Alimentarium did not get permission to permanently leave the fork in its original location, as some saw it as just an advertising totem. Thus, the fork was moved to Littau, near Lucerne, to beautify the garden of the Berndorf cutlery factory.Fortunately, in 2007 the giant fork returned to Lake Geneva for a temporary exhibition called "Couverts Découverts." The enthusiasm of visitors and a petition of support launched by a local committee prompted the Vevey City Council to take decisive action to have the fork returned to Vevey permanently. In late 2008, thanks to the canton’s intervention, the fork gained legal recognition as part of the Lake Geneva landscape, giving visitors a unique opportunity to admire this majestic sculpture. The giant Vevey fork represents not only an artistic masterpiece, but also a symbol of recognition and celebration of culinary culture. This monumental work of art has become a must-see destination for visitors to Vevey, captivating them with its imposing presence and the unique atmosphere it creates on the lakefront. Be prepared to take photos, reflect on the symbolic power of art, and immerse yourself in the magic of Vevey as you marvel at this iconic fork rising majestically above Lake Geneva.
