The Suomenlinna Water Fortress is one of the most visited monuments in Finland. Just a few minutes by ferry from the centre of Helsinki.
This ancient naval base of the archipelago’s fleet was built around the middle of the 17th century, when Finland was still part of the Kingdom of Sweden. In 1991, Suomenlinna was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the second half of the 18th century, the island fortress protecting Helsinki has become one of the most characteristic places in Finland’s capital, with its sea ramparts and characteristic buildings. Despite its grandeur, the Suomenlinna sea fortress surrendered to the Russians without even firing a cannon!
