he colossal Verano Cemetery is, like the Colosseum and St. Peter’s, a tourist destination in the capital. Built during the "Napoleonic captivity" at the beginning of the nineteenth century, in an area that was already the site of the Catacombs in Roman times, it respected the order to move the burials out of the city to avoid the spread of disease. The project was designed by Giuseppe Valadier and Virginio Vespignani, leading figures in Roman architecture in the nineteenth century, who created, among other things, an elegant tri-portico entrance, with neoclassical statues and friezes.
Its structure, which is as vast as it is historically important, means that guided tours are organised on a regular basis, touching the tombs of the most famous personalities, among whom are Goffredo Mameli
