The Civic Museum of Cuneo is housed in the evocative setting of the Monumental Complex of S. Francesco, including the former convent and the adjoining church, classified as a national monument and a rare example of medieval architecture in the city.
The Franciscan friars settled in this place, probably already from the 13th century; especially from the 15th century the Complex became an important reference point for all the citizens of Cuneo and the noble families participated with large donations to the embellishment and enlargement of the structure. Napoleon’s army took possession of the building, chased away the friars and used the church and the convent as barracks and military garrison; the furniture was dispersed in other religious buildings or sold. After many ups and downs and various changes of use, since 1980 the entire complex has been used as a place for cultural activities and houses the Civic Museum.
