In Piazza Pascoli, on the left of Palazzo Lanfranchi, there is the church of the Madonna del Carmine incorporated into the Seminary when it was built in 1684. Its construction dates back to the early seventeenth century and is due to the members of the Carmelite order who resided in Matera.
It has a single nave. The wooden portal is of fine workmanship; above it there is a niche that houses a statue, attributed to Stefano da Putignano, depicting the Madonna; at the sides there are two other niches in which there are two sculptures representing St. Nicholas on the left and St. Philip Neri on the right.
The church is no longer intended for worship but has been ‘converted’ into a valuable and refined container in which exhibitions and cultural events are held.
