The Castle occupies an area of over 10,000 square meters on the highest part of the rocky nucleus. Recent restorations have returned in all its grandeur the structure that is certainly among the most fascinating, complex and best preserved in southern Italy. The Castle of Santa Severina is difficult to date because it preserves such significant traces of the various structural passages that it is unique of its kind.
The castle contains the Documentation and Studies Centre of Calabrian Castles and Fortifications, and a permanent exhibition on Calabrian Military Architecture with panels and three-dimensional models aimed at illustrating the types of military architecture. In the bastion of the Banner is set up the archaeological museum, while on the ground floor of the keep is the archaeological museum. The feudal residence located on the main floor of the castle is particularly interesting for the sumptuous decoration that adorns the rooms, commissioned by the Greuther family in the eighteenth century.
