It is one of the most evocative and mighty castles in Abruzzo. It stands proudly on a rocky spur from which dominates the characteristic medieval village of Roccascalegna, the Rio Secco valley and the wide Sangro valley. Its origin is most likely linked to the Lombards who fortified the fortress around the fifth/sixth century, later it passed under the Swabians, the Angevins and the Aragonese and as the structure took on a more elaborate appearance.
