The castle of Gorizia, dating back to the XI century, is the ancient heart of the city. Situated on the hill overlooking the town, the castle offers a spectacular panoramic view of Gorizia and the surrounding area, entering the castle through the Leopoldina Gate, built in 1660 in honor of the visit of Emperor Leopold of Habsburg.
The manor house reflects the evolution that took place between the 13th and 16th centuries with the progressive addition of buildings and defensive structures. In its history the castle was, therefore, modified several times, with the addition of ramparts and towers and used for different functions, from administrative centre to barracks, to prison. The castle of Gorizia also houses in the Knights’ Hall, the Museum of the Middle Ages in Gorizia, where there are interesting handmade reproductions of the white weapons used in the medieval period.
