Walking through the small streets of the old town of Crotone you can reach the ancient fortress of the city from where you can see the only example of a castle that still incorporates the ancient Greek Acropolis.
It is one of the most important military structures in Southern Italy.
Its position, situated in the upper part of the city, allowed to keep under control both the sea, threatened by pirate raids, and the surrounding countryside.
It seems that the oldest nucleus was circular in shape, while it is certain that in the 16th century two cylindrical towers were built at the corners, later connected by large walls with two pentagonal bastions, the San Giacomo and the Santa Caterina.
Nowadays the new castle incorporates the old one in a quadrangular plan wanted by the Spanish viceroy Don Pedro da Toledo.
Currently the castle is the seat of the civic museum and library of the city, as well as numerous cultural events.
