The Candlestick Tower

The Torre del Candeliere, also known as the Clock Tower, is the only remaining remnant of the old fortress built by the free commune of Massa Marittima in 1228. Both the Candlestick Tower and the Sienese Fortress can be visited, and both offer a fabulous view of the town, the surrounding countryside and the coastline. The clock is placed at half height on the side of the wall overlooking the square, while the top of the fortification is characterized by a narrow sail-shaped structure with a rectangular section that rises on the same side of the clock. The tower is accessed through a raised door reached by a modern staircase that has replaced the original ramp.
