The Bastion of the Knights of Malta was built in the 16th century when, in order to face the Saracens who threatened the security and trade of the city, they imposed on the communities the strengthening of the coastal defence system. It was the Knights of Malta who built this mighty structure, which is still in good condition eight hundred meters from the shoreline.
The Bastion with a truncated pyramidal base is divided into four rooms and is covered by a large terrace.
On the entrance door there is the coat of arms with shield of the Bali’ Fra Signorino Gattinara, to whom is attributed the merit of having equipped the Bastion with war machines.
With the sale of ecclesiastical goods, the Bastion also became private property.
