The Basilica of San Vitale is one of the most important monuments of early Christian and Byzantine art in Italy, and was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1996. Its construction began in 525 by order of Bishop Ecclesio and was completed in 547 by Archbishop Massimiano. The fusion of elements of western and eastern tradition is evident both in the architecture and in the mosaic decoration and requires the participation of not only local workers. The central nucleus built on an octagonal plan is surmounted by a frescoed dome. The upward tension of the structure is further lightened by the light that, penetrating from different angles, creates unpredictable games that give the environment a supernatural dimension and push the eye to the sky.
However, looking at the ground, in the presbytery, it is possible to admire the representation of a labyrinth symbolizing the tortuous paths of the soul towards purification.
