The Basilian monks were the initiators of the construction of the building erected as a fortified monastery and agricultural production centre. In 1791 the building, with the entire latifundium, was bought by Princess Maria Grimaldi Gerace Serra, who transformed it into a noble farmhouse and built the village around it. In 1893 the whole estate passed to Baron Berlingieri of Crotone.
