The Barbacana (Barbakan) is the most interesting part of the medieval fortifications of Krakow and one of the few buildings of this type that are preserved in Europe.Built in 1499 in response to the Ottoman occupation, the Barbacana has a circular plan of 25 meters in diameter, surrounded by a wall several meters thick in stone and brick, in turn surrounded by a moat.Even if the visit simply consists of climbing the stairs, with very little to see, it is interesting to make a combined visit to the fortress and the wall, to discover the past of the city.
During the visit you will cross the Barbacana passing through the watchtowers.
