The Archaeological Museum is located in the monumental complex called Loggione e Cavallerizza. The building, a splendid example of late Gothic architecture, divided into two naves covered by cross vaults supported by ogive arches, was built in the 14th century in the area of the early medieval castle, by the powerful Marzano family, in a dominant position over the acropolis and the lower town. Equipped with a cavea (this is the name of the area occupied by the spectators) about 85 m in diameter, the scenic building is 26 m high and was decorated with three orders of columns, capitals, architraves and sculptures made of rare and precious marble.
