The Amphitheatre of Durres, built in the 2nd century BC, figures amongst one the largest monuments of the Antiquity. It is the only monument of this type in Albania. The Amphitheater is unique because it has only been partially excavated.
The amphitheater is elliptical in its shape, about 135 meters at its longest point, with the arena itself measuring about 60 meters by 40 meters across. On the terraced seats there would have been space for no less than 15000 spectators, about a third of the capacity of the Colosseum in Rome.
