Alentejo is a region of Portugal between Lisbon and the Algarve, with a rich historical heritage and considered one of the most authentic areas of the country. Literally in Portuguese it means "behind the river Tejo", and it is a gem hidden outside the normal circuits of international tourism, which will amaze anyone who chooses to visit it, thanks also to the fact that it is a region that has kept intact its folklore tradition. The Alentejo region includes two provinces: Alto Alentejo and Baixo Alentejo. The main cities are Evora, Beja, Serpa, Estremoz, Elvas and Portalegre. To the north the region is delimited by the river Tejo, while to the south it borders on the most famous region of the Algarve. To the west it overlooks the Atlantic Ocean, where it borders the region of Lisbon; to the east it is bounded by the border with Spain. Evora, for example, is only 130 kilometers from the capital Lisbon, while the other cities are just a little further away. The Alentejo is a land rich in history, villages and towns that will make anyone who visits them for the first time fall in love. Testimonies of the past combine with local traditions to create a unique mix of colours, flavours and sounds.
