The Abbey of Fontevraud

Fontevraud Abbey is located in the Pays de la Loire region. Regarded as one of the largest monastic cities in Europe, a royal necropolis of the Plantagenets, Fontevraud Abbey is striking both for its size and its originality. Turned into a prison by Napoleon in 1804, it is saved from destruction and becomes a terrible prison headquarters. The last prisoners would leave it only in 1985.
