Temple of Hercules

<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">The <strong>Temple of Hercules</strong> &egrave; one of the most significant monuments found in the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, Sicily. This majestic temple dates back to the 5th century BC and is one of the most imposing and well-preserved examples of ancient Greek architecture. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">The Temple of Hercules was originally dedicated to the demigod Heracles, also known as Hercules in Roman mythology.&nbsp;Hercules and Heracles refer to the same character in mythology, but they are two different forms of the name. In Roman mythology, the name "Hercules" &egrave; is more common, while in Greek mythology the name "Heracles" is used.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">The character of <strong>Hercules/Heracles</strong> &egrave; a legendary hero, known for his superhuman strength and heroic deeds. &egrave; son of <strong>Zeus</strong>, the king of the gods, and Alcmena, a mortal woman. Hercules/Eracle &egrave; famous for performing a series of twelve labors, which were imposed on him as penance for killing his family during a divine rapture induced by Hera, the wife of Zeus.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">The twelve labors of Hercules/Eracle include such feats as capturing the <a href="https://sworld.co.uk/01/948/place/statua-di-ercole-ed-il-leone-Secret-World"><strong>leon of Nemean</strong></a>, killing the Hydra of Lerna, capturing the hind of Cerinea, and cleaning the famous stables of King Augia. Each effort represented a test of the protagonist’s strength, courage and skill.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">The temple, built in the Doric style, is characterized by its massive marble columns, of which eight remain standing on one side and one column fallen to the ground today. These columns, with their characteristic scrolled capitals, are an impressive testimony to the art and architecture of ancient Greece. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">The size and solidity of the Temple of Hercules hint at the importance and prestige of this deity in ancient Agrigento.
