Established in 1972, the Teloglion Foundation of Art emerged as a cultural treasure trove, born from the generous donation of Nestor and Aliki Telloglou’s art collection and property to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. This institution embarked on a journey to celebrate and preserve Greek art, encapsulating the essence of the 19th and 20th centuries. Over the years, the foundation has flourished, its artistic tapestry woven together by subsequent donations, including the invaluable art collection of Tony and Ioanna Spiteris, the archival material of Giorgos Mourelos, and the recent inclusion of Dimitris Tsamis’ art collection and that of other gifted artists.
The Teloglion Foundation of Art, unveiled to the public in December 1999 with the exhibition “Collections and Donations,” finds its home in a modern and striking edifice nestled at the northern end of the campus. Its multifaceted mission revolves around the essence of art appreciation, preservation, scholarly exploration, and educational enlightenment.
The foundation’s objectives encompass:
Bridging Art and People: At its core, the foundation seeks to offer individuals the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of art. It opens its doors to art enthusiasts, scholars, and the public, fostering a deep and lasting connection with the creative realm.
Custodians of Culture: The foundation is not merely a repository of art but a guardian of Greece’s rich cultural heritage. It diligently collects, documents, and studies the nation’s cultural legacy, ensuring its protection and nurturing its growth.
A Haven for Creativity: The Teloglion Foundation of Art is a space where artists and scholars can collaborate, share ideas, and embark on creative journeys. It stands as a haven where innovation and tradition intersect.
Illuminating Minds: Education is pivotal, and the foundation extends its influence through special educational programs that enrich students’ comprehension of art, nurturing a new generation of art aficionados and connoisseurs.
In 2007, the “Association of Friends of the Teloglion Foundation of Art” was established, heralding a new chapter in the foundation’s remarkable journey. This association has dedicated itself to advancing the mission and work of the Teloglion Foundation of Art, amplifying its cultural significance, and engaging with a broader audience that shares a passion for the arts.
