Swinging Bridge on the Toccoa River

<p>The <strong>Benton MacKaye Trail</strong> or BMT is a footpath nearly 300 miles (480 km) in length in the <a href="https://sworld.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Appalachian Mountains</strong></a> in the southeastern United States and is blazed by a white diamond, 5&Prime; across by 7&Prime; tall. The hiking trail was created and is maintained by the Benton MacKaye Trail Association, and it is named for Benton MacKaye, the Massachusetts forester and regional planner who first had the idea for the Appalachian Trail in 1921.</p> <p>A popular destination for day-hikers, Benton MacKaye Trail thru-hikers, and paddlers making the journey down the Toccoa River Canoe Trail is the swinging bridge over the Toccoa River. It is the longest swinging bridge east of the Mississippi. They call it a swinging bridge, but they don&rsquo;t always mention the bouncing&hellip; Where the Benton MacKaye Trail meets the Duncan Ridge National Recreation Trail, in the fantastically named Chattahoochee Oconee National Forest, is a 270-foot hiker&rsquo;s bridge high up over the Toccoa River. The bridge sways and jostles with every step, so &ndash; what else to call it but a swinging bridge. Built in 1977 by the National Forest Service, it is one of several like it in the southeastern United States. This one isn&rsquo;t the highest (that honor goes to the Mile High Swinging Bridge in Linville, North Carolina), but it is the longest.</p>
