Stepanakert is the capital of Nagorno Karabakh, a country which is basically recognised by no-one but itself, and Armenia.
It has an ancient history. The first settlements here have already arisen in III-II millenia BCE. The archeological excavations conducted here by scientist Emil Resler at the end of the 19th century, revealed the richest burial places of that time, and parts of the findings are kept in the largest museums in the world. One of the most picturesque locales of Stepanakert is the central market, which represents an original combination of the fair of industrial goods and agricultural production. Visitors feel as though they are in a real noisy and colourful market of the Eastern world.
One of the most memorable places in the city is the memorial park of lost soldiers.
