St Helena and the Royal Mail Ship

St. Helena is a British Overseas Territory and as such, is served by the last remaining royal mail ship that makes a round trip from Cape Town to Ascension Island via St. Helena every three weeks. It is a piece of history and a pleasure to take a trip aboard. The trip takes five days from Cape Town and I was fortunate enough to be on board as 2016 became 2017.Celebrating New Year’s Eve in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean was very special indeed. The staff on board does a fantastic job of providing delicious food, you never go hungry, and retro entertainment such as deck shuffle board and highly competitive team quizzes. It is a special experience to be on board for so long, meeting people you would never have met otherwise before arriving at your destination. A cruise with a difference!St. Helena is a remote volcanic island located in the South Atlantic Ocean, about 2,000 kilometers west of the African coast. The island is famous for being the prison where Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled and where he died in 1821.The island can only be reached by ship, with the RMS St. Helena making a round trip every three weeks from Cape Town, South Africa. The island has a small community of about 4,500 people and offers many tourist attractions, including Rupert’s Castle, St. James Church, and the famous Jamestown Stairs.Tourism on St. Helena Island has been growing in recent years due to its natural beauty, unique history and outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing and diving. However, the island remains a remote and isolated place with a tourist infrastructure that is still being developed.Taking a trip on the Royal Postal Ship left to reach St. Helena is a unique and interesting experience, allowing you to experience the beauty of the South Atlantic Ocean and get to know the local people before arriving at your destination.
