In the town of Nuévalos, a few kilometres from Calatayud, is the famous "Monasterio de Piedra", an old Cistercian monastery located in a beautiful natural park full of waterfalls, beautiful cascades and caves. It is one of the most beautiful and visited places in Aragon.
The natural park is an oasis of peace, an ideal place to relax, letting yourself be carried away by the murmur of the water falling through the different waterfalls. The so-called "Cola de Caballo" is the most famous. Inside there is a large natural cave with stalactite formations. In contrast to the waterfalls you can admire the calm waters of Lago del Espejo (Mirror Lake).
Your first impression when you arrive here will be one of surprise. Be surprised when you discover this unusual orchard where water and abundant vegetation reign in the midst of an arid landscape. The same surprise was felt by the monks who came here and founded a Cistercian monastery in the 12th century. Some of its rooms can still be visited today, such as the cloister, the chapter house, the kitchen where the first chocolate in Europe was made, the church and its crypt, the refectory or the bathroom.
You can complete your visit with an exhibition of birds of prey and visit the Wine Museum of the Calatayud Denomination of Origin, located in the old cellar of the monastery.
