The landmark Soweto Theatre opened in 2012 and is Soweto’s first formal, dedicated performance space. The impressive building has a curved box-like structure and is covered in brightly coloured ceramic tiles, with the theatre’s three different stages instantly identifiable by their bright blue, red or yellow tiles.
Inside the vast front entrance, various quirky artworks are on display that were commissioned to represent the community of which the theatre forms a part, making for a welcoming space that is well-supported by locals.
The building boasts three state-of-the-art stages: the main stage, which can accommodate an audience of 420, and two smaller stages with a capacity of 180 and 90 each, as well as an outdoor auditorium.
The theatre programme includes a broad range of productions, ranging from poetry recitals and jazz and gospel concerts to modern dance and drama. In particular the theatre focuses on fostering local talent, showcasing the works of local playwrights…
