In the first kilometres of its course the Serio River forms the Upper and Lower Barbellino Lakes, and crosses the tourist resort of Valbondione, in whose territory the Serio Falls are located: it is a triple jump for a total of 315 metres, the highest in Italy and the second highest in Europe.
In 1931, on the site of a small natural lake, a dam was built for the production of electricity that interrupted the course of the river. In ’69 the dam opened the barriers to revive the beauty of the waterfalls. Since then, in agreement with ENEL, the event is repeated several times during each summer season.
The calendar of the opening of the Serio Falls is generally announced in spring, through the publication on the website of Turismo Presolana. Particularly suggestive is the opening at night, which for some years now has been held in July, sometimes accompanied by a food and wine event.
