Sassello, known since the Middle Ages as an industrial center for ironworking, today is one of the most vital cultural centers of the Savona hinterland and was the first Italian municipality to obtain the orange flag of the Italian Touring Club for the tourist and environmental quality of the hinterland. The old town is divided between the 12th century Bastia Soprana and the Bastia Sottana founded by the Doria family in the 15th century, with frescoed palaces and Baroque churches.
Chiara Luce Badano, a young focolarina beatified in 2010, was born, lived and died here in 1990. Since then, her tomb in the cemetery of Sassello has been the destination of continuous pilgrimages.
Don’t miss a visit to Palazzo Perrando and the Assandri stone mill, a walk in the Deiva Forest, a tasting of typical local products, including the famous amaretti biscuits and the delicious porcini mushrooms.
