The Sarajevo Tunnel is a tunnel that allowed the city to survive the siege during the Balkan War that raged through the area in the first half of the 1990s.
The scars of the recent war are still very much in evidence in the city, and a great way to become aware of what Sarajevo went through during those years is to follow just the Complete Sarajevo War Tour. You can start at the Tunnel Museum where you can explore part of the tunnel that was used to supply the city with food and other utilities during the three-year siege.
Besieged by Serbian forces, without water, electricity, gas or telephone, Sarajevo managed to survive thanks to this tunnel called "Tunnel of Hope – Tunnel Spasa". From mid-1993 to 1995 this tunnel connected Sarajevo with the still free part of the Bosnian territory passing under the neutral territory of the airport, protected by the United Nations, for about 800 meters.
If you are lucky, your guide may have been a first-hand witness of the events of those years and will share with you very vivid and engaging memories and personal experiences.
