In Latiano, in the province of Brindisi, there is the beautiful Sanctuary of the Madonna di Cotrino, where you can spend moments of intense prayer and inner peace. The first certain news we have starting from 1377, but Cotrino was born with the legend of the finding of the image of the Madonna, occurred in 1605 by a peasant woman from Basilicata who came to Latiano for the will of the Mother of God.
The ancient effigy dates back to the beginning of 1600 and was placed on the high altar of the chapel built in 1627, restored and enlarged with a neoclassical facade in 1856.
In 1915 the adjoining monastery was built and since 1922 it has been managed by the Cistercian Monks; a new and majestic church was also built, designed by the engineers Oronzo and Luigi Sticchi from Maglie.
Solemn celebrations for Maria Santissima di Cotrino on May 4-5-6, with a novena that takes place on the 9 Saturdays preceding the feast.
