Thrill-seekers, even in the true sense of the word since this place is always cool even in summer, should add the Sanctuary of San Bernardino alle Ossa to their list of places to visit in Milan.
A few steps away from Piazza Fontana, in the shadow of the church of Santo Stefano Maggiore, there is an ossuary built in the 13th century which houses thousands of skulls, shinbones and other human remains. All these bones make up designs, in artistic compositions held in place by metal netting. It is not clear who all those bones belong to and how they ended up there, but for centuries those skulls have been silently observing worshippers and visitors.
