Located in an area of Salzburg full of typical houses, and close to the edge of a nature reserve, Voglreiter’s Auto Residence stands out like a Gremlin in a parking lot full of Mercedes sedans. A house that combines not only a passion for cars, but also a love of eco-sustainability.
Voglreiter had bought a traditional suburban house from the 1970s and wanted to renovate it – what led him to make it look like a car is not entirely clear.
Surprisingly, despite Austria’s strict building regulations, and with his house located very close to Salzburg’s historic district, Voglreiter received approval from the relevant authorities.
The house has energy-efficient heating and cooling and super thermal insulation, while natural daylight and ventilation play an important role in the design, even though the house is unconventional. Another interesting result of the project are the separate areas for parents and children, achieved in an unconventional way thus allowing several generations to live under one roof.
