At the foot of the Corbières mountains, in the municipality of Salses-le-Château, there is a jewel of Spanish military architecture: the fortress of Salses, a fortified building built at the end of the 15th century on the orders of the Spanish Catholic kings, Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella of Castile, to protect the border between Spain and the Kingdom of France…
Considered impregnable, this great stronghold was remodelled by Vauban in 1691 and today it is open to the public all year round. The visit allows you to admire the typical elements of defensive architecture: moats, escarpments, drawbridge, keep, artillery tower, curtain walls and crescents.
This exceptional site, classified Historical Monument, regularly hosts exhibitions of works by contemporary artists.
