Galatone is a small village that rises in the Salento peninsula and overlooks the Ionian coast, just 13 km from Gallipoli.il Borgo lies on the slope of a hill, lush with vines and fig trees. The name of the village derives from the Greek word "gála" which means "milk", an origin evidently linked to sheep farming, the main activity practiced at the time when the town began to be established, or from the Greek family name "Galatos". The first settlements in the territory date back to the Neolithic period, as evidenced by the finds found in the "Villaggio Costante" on the Serra Campilatini and in the cave Pinnella. The importance that Galatone had during the medieval period is clearly visible in the buildings still preserved in excellent condition. To see there are certainly: the Castle of Fulcignano, the monumental gate of San Sebastiano, the Marchesale Palace and the Mother Church, dedicated to Maria SS Assunta.
