Salcombe Harbour is mainly a recreational and leisure, commercial shell-fishing ecoport. Bathed in an almost Mediterranean climate the South Hams most Southerly town is located in an area of breathtaking, unspoilt natural beauty. With its picturesque harbour, dramatic coastline and wonderful surrounding countryside it is no wonder that Salcombe has been a popular holiday destination as long as can be remembered. A Mecca for wildlife enthusiasts, birds flock in their thousands to the harbour. The estuary is a haven for a wide variety of fish, including many very rare species, and is frequently visited by basking sharks and dolphins. Like birds, folk with a passion for the life aquatic also flock here in their thousands and who could blame them? The opportunities for sailing, boating fishing and water-sports are virtually matchless anywhere else in the UK. Salcombe also boasts several excellent sailing schools offering tuition to the very highest standard. The little town itself is vibrant labyrinth of narrow streets and steep alleyways, its charm equalled only by the variety of shops, fine restaurants and cafes from which to choose. You can stroll at your leisure whilst enjoying delicious, locally produced ice cream or chocolate, visit Island Street’s famous boatyards or catch a ferry to nearby East Portlemouth and North and South Sands for a day on the beach. In short Salcombe has everything you would expect from a British holiday by the sea – and maybe just a little bit more!
