Azhdahak Peak, also known as Azhadak or Ajdahak, is an extinct volcano in the Geghama mountain range of Armenia, standing at 3,597 meters. Its defining feature is the crater lake formed by melted snow, offering panoramic views, including the distant Mount Ararat.
The surrounding area is rich in ancient petroglyphs, highlighting the region’s deep historical significance. In Armenian folklore, Azhdahak is a mythical dragon or serpent symbolizing chaos and strength.
The peak's combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage makes it a top destination for hikers and adventure seekers.

Jiantanshan trail

If you're looking to enjoy a hike just outside of Taipei with a stunning city skyline view, the Jiantanshan Trail is an ideal choice. Unlike the popular Elephant Mountain, which often attracts large crowds of tourists, Jiantanshan offers a quieter, more secluded experience, making it a true hidden gem for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
The trail provides a tranquil retreat where you can enjoy nature without the throngs of people typically found at more tourist-oriented spots. It's perfect for anyone seeking a peaceful hike where they can relax and take in the beautiful surroundings.
Accessing the Jiantanshan Trail is quite straightforward. Simply take the MRT to Jiantan Station and use exit number 2. From there, a short walk through the Yuanshan Scenic Area leads you to a set of stone steps ascending a hill. This is where the trail begins, winding its way up and offering increasingly impressive views of Taipei as you climb.
The path itself is well-maintained, and as you ascend, you'll be treated to lush greenery and the occasional clearing where the city stretches out below. It’s an excellent spot for both novice hikers and those looking for a quick outdoor escape without venturing too far from the city center.
So if you're in Taipei and want a less crowded alternative to Elephant Mountain, with equally rewarding views, Jiantanshan Trail is definitely worth the visit.

Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek

Perched majestically above the Hunza and Nagar valleys, Rakaposhi stands tall at 7,778 meters (25,518 feet), ranking as the 27th highest mountain globally. From its base camp, trekkers are treated to breathtaking vistas not only of Rakaposhi itself but also of the stunning Diran and Minapin Glaciers.
But wait, there's more! Adventurers also have the opportunity to journey onward to the Diran Peak Base Camp, situated on the opposite side of the captivating Minapin Glacier, which appears almost surreal in its psychedelic beauty.
While some daring souls opt for a single-day trek, I personally find this a tad... audacious. To truly savor the enchanting allure of this landscape, I recommend a minimum of 2 nights and 3 days, with the option to extend your stay for further exploration of the surrounding peaks.
With well-marked trails and lush greenery enveloping the route, the Rakaposhi Base Camp trek serves as an ideal initiation for those eager to immerse themselves in Pakistan's mesmerizing mountain scenery.
For me, embarking on this trek marked my second "real" hiking experience in Pakistan and remains one of the most unforgettable. My companion and I were fortunate enough to have the entire base camp to ourselves for over 16 hours, an experience that left an indelible impression.
While a guide isn't necessary for reaching Rakaposhi base camp, a basic understanding of the terrain is advisable. Having spent a total of 8 months in Pakistan, with 4 of those months dedicated to trekking throughout the Gilgit-Baltistan region, I've gleaned invaluable insights about the area.
So, if a journey to Pakistan is on your horizon, read on. This is one of those "must-do" experiences that you won't want to overlook!

Livaditis Waterfall (Thrace)

Livaditis Waterfall, situated in the South Peloponnese region of Greece, is a 40-meter-high natural spectacle that offers more than just its grand cascades. Reaching the waterfall is no easy feat, and it's recommended that you be in good physical shape and well-prepared for the trek.
Your journey to the falls begins at the signage between Darma and Xanthi. From Xanthi, you'll make your way to the small town of Stavroupoli and ultimately to the village of Livaditi. Signboards and red and white marks on rocks and trees help guide you through your journey.
The trail to Livaditis takes you through a dense forest teeming with a variety of trees and shrubs. The woodland is so rich in fauna that you might even catch glimpses of wild animals such as deer along the way—though hopefully not bears!
Once you reach the waterfall, you'll find there are various activities to partake in, but a picnic beside the roaring falls is perhaps the most rewarding. The idyllic setting makes for the perfect backdrop to a relaxing day in nature.
Visiting in the autumn is especially rewarding, as you'll get to see the forest adorned in fiery-colored foliage. The autumnal scenery extends beyond the forest to the mountains in the nearby region, making your adventure to Livaditis Waterfall a multi-sensory experience you won't soon forget.

Vyros Gorge

Vyros Gorge is a stunning natural wonder located in the Peloponnese region of southern Greece, specifically in the area of Mani. The gorge offers an extraordinary landscape, characterized by dramatic cliffs, lush vegetation, and a river that snakes through the canyon, creating an intricate system of waterfalls and natural pools. This gem is a haven for nature enthusiasts, hikers, and adventurers looking for a scenic and somewhat challenging outdoor experience.

The gorge is formed by the Vyros River, which originates from the Taygetos mountain range, one of the highest in the Peloponnese. The river has carved out the canyon over millennia, resulting in the awe-inspiring landscape we see today. Along the route, you'll encounter a variety of flora and fauna, making it a wonderful place for birdwatching and botany enthusiasts. Wild herbs, oleander, and plane trees are just some of the diverse plant life you'll encounter.

Several hiking trails crisscross the area, suitable for different levels of expertise. Some paths lead to hidden chapels and monasteries that add a cultural element to the natural beauty of the gorge. Among these is the Monastery of Sotiros, which is built into the rocky cliffs and offers panoramic views of the gorge below.

Whether you're interested in a day-hike or multi-day trekking experience, Vyros Gorge provides a variety of options. The trails are generally well-marked, but hiring a local guide can enrich your experience by providing historical context and identifying local plant and animal species.

Due to its remote location, the Vyros Gorge remains relatively unspoiled and offers a peaceful escape from more touristy spots. If you visit during the spring or early summer, you'll be treated to a spectacular display of wildflowers. In the autumn, the foliage takes on a range of warm hues, providing a different yet equally stunning experience.

All in all, Vyros Gorge offers an excellent opportunity for those looking to explore the natural beauty of Greece while also diving into its rich cultural history. With its challenging trails and breathtaking vistas, it's a must-visit for anyone who appreciates the great outdoors.

The Kalamaris Waterfall

The Kalamaris Waterfall offers a somewhat bittersweet experience for visitors. Located near Gialova, the waterfall is a natural wonder that can be accessed by following signs leading to Schinolaka. Though the journey may seem challenging—requiring a drive down a dirt road, followed by a 15-minute hike through a narrow pathway filled with wild vegetation—the destination rewards you with a tranquil clearing surrounded by ancient plane trees.

Especially in the scorching heat of the summer months, the area surrounding the waterfall provides a refreshing respite. The thick dew hanging in the air, the sound of water trickling down the rocks, and the shade of the large plane trees make this a haven for anyone looking to escape the heat. Man-made steps lead you from a quaint bridge up to the waterfall and its accompanying lake.

However, this idyllic setting is marred by the issue of water pollution. The local olive presses and other industrial units in the wider Pylos area have been depositing waste into the lake without any treatment, leading to water contamination. This unfortunate reality is visibly evident, with layers of oil often seen floating on the lake's surface.

Though local authorities have recently reconstructed the pathway leading to the waterfall, more needs to be done to restore and preserve the natural beauty of Kalamaris Waterfall. Until then, while the area serves as a beautiful locale for a day trip, visitors should be cautioned about the state of the lake's water quality.

Despite the challenges, the Kalamaris Waterfall remains a compelling destination for those interested in experiencing the lesser-known natural attractions of Greece, as long as you go in aware of its current environmental issues.

Barão de São João, located in southern Portugal, is a fascinating place known for its National Park and an interesting attraction called "Passeio dos Poetas Stone Faces" (the Stone Faces Trail). The Passeio dos Poetas is a trail located in the Barão de São João National Forest, where a pile of stone faces emerges from the forest floor, looking down on visitors walking along the trail. These stone faces are carved on rocks and arranged to look like a kind of outdoor art installation. Each stone face has a unique shape and expression, and the overall effect is to create a mysterious and evocative atmosphere along the trail. As you walk among these faces, you may feel as if you are interacting with ancient entities or imaginary characters that inhabit the forest.Created in 2012 by local artist and teacher Deodato Inácio Santos, the faces are part of the larger "Passeio dos Poetas," which includes other sculptures and poetic verses that enrich a path through the reserve. In the summer of that year, Santos organized an art explosion that turned the small town of 800 in the western Algarve into a living gallery. Although much of that summer's art was temporary, the faces remain as part of the legacy of that transformation. From the town of the same name, head up the hill to the reserve parking area. Follow the signs to Passeio dos Poetas; the faces are on the left side of the path, about a 10-minute walk from the picnic pavilion. The trail offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in the lush nature of Barão de São João National Park while experiencing a touch of art and creativity. It is a place that can inspire reflection and allow visitors to immerse themselves in a one-of-a-kind experience. The hiking trail is of easy difficulty and is generally well maintained. Even those with some mobility difficulties should be able to reach the site.In addition to the Passeio dos Poetas, Barão de São João also offers other noteworthy natural and cultural attractions. The National Park is a protected area that offers a variety of hiking trails, ideal for nature lovers and hikers. There are also picturesque traditional villages to explore and a vibrant community of artists and artisans who contribute to the local culture. All in all, the Passeio dos Poetas Stone Faces in Barão de São João is a unique attraction that combines nature and art in a fascinating way. It was built in 1915 through the generous donation of Ernest Solvay, a Belgian industrialist, and is named in his memory. The Solvay hut was designed as a place of shelter and safety for mountaineers facing challenges on the Matterhorn and surrounding mountains. Its strategic location provides a vital reference point for climbers in distress or in case of emergencies at altitude.Despite being an emergency shelter, the Solvay Hut is small in size and offers only a small space for sleeping and resting. It is essential for climbers to bring their own equipment and sleeping bags when they venture to use this hut.The Solvay Hut is only accessible to experienced climbers, as it requires technical skills and good physical preparation to reach it. However, for those who are able to do so, the experience of spending the night in this high-altitude hut offers a unique feeling of adventure and connection with the majesty of the mountains. The Solvay Hut has become a symbol of mountaineering and the challenge of climbing the Matterhorn. It is a place where mountaineers can find shelter and protection in an extreme environment. Its centuries-old history and spectacular location make it a fascinating point of interest for mountain enthusiasts and adventure seekers visiting Zermatt.

The climb to the top of Pico do Papagaio is one of the most popular hikes on the island and offers spectacular views of the crystal clear ocean waters. If you only plan to do one hike on Ilha Grande, the climb to Pico do Papagaio is the one we recommend. This is the best hike on the island and will take you to one of the highest viewpoints on the island. If you are able to get up early on your vacation, we recommend that you do the hike at sunrise to see the sunrise. This is what we did and we loved it! We left Abraão at 1 a.m. to reach the top. It took only 3.5 hours with some short breaks. It is not mandatory to do the hike at dawn, but the heat would make the climb much more difficult during the day. Also, we recommend that you keep an eye out for wildlife along the way.A warning to travelers: Be warned that if you don't like wildlife (e.g. spiders), don't do the hike alone-there are many of them along the trail, especially at night!Overall, the hike to Pico do Papagaio is one of the most spectacular experiences you can have on Ilha Grande Island. The promontory of Punta Mesco, largely uninhabited and covered with Mediterranean vegetation, is one of the largest and best known promontories in Liguria.

Its forward part consists of thick layers of sandstone, stacked on top of each other, forming spectacular sheer walls overlooking the sea. The Promontory of Punta Mesco (and the remains of its Hermitage) can be reached on foot, via two easy paths, departing from Monterosso or Levanto.

From MONTEROSSO. The start of the Trail to Punta Mesco is located on the road leading to the "Suisse Bellevue" hotel. Two turns before reaching the hotel, on your right, you will find the beginning (starts with steps) of the trail. Duration about 30/35 minutes, easy difficulty.

From LEVANTO. Starting from Levanto, walk down Via Mesco for about two kilometers (5 minutes by car) until you reach the hotel "La Giada del Mesco." Right from the hotel is the start of the trail. Duration about 1 hour and 15 minutes, easy/medium difficulty.

The Parco delle Mura (Park of the City Walls) is a Protected Natural Area of 617 hectares of hills that surrounds Genoa. It is named after the New Walls erected in the 17th century to protect the city and its harbour. Besides them, the area includes many military forts built betweeen 17th-19th centuries. There are different itineraries to follow, each of them runs through meadows, woods, pastures and remains of the area’s sheep-farming past.

The most popular destinations are Forte Diamante, the Park’s highest and most isolated fort (660 metres above sea level), Forte Begato, overlooking Polcevera Valley, Fratello Maggiore and Minore, Puin, Sperone and Tenaglie.

Most of paths presents no or almost not particular difficulty, anyway a minimal amount of training is required. I personally recommend you to not trek during summertime due to high temperatures and sun exposure.

Best access to Parco delle Mura is by funicular Righi or Genova-Casella Railway (get off at Trensasco).

The route is divided into 10 stages, not all of them consecutive, crossing two regions (Piedmont and Aosta Valley) and four valleys (Ossola, Valsesia, Gressoney Valley and Ayas Valley).

If you want to enjoy pure nature, marvel at varied landscapes and experience living history, then head to the Selketal-Stieg.
The 69 km long trail starts in Stiege, at the station of the Selketalbahn. After a few kilometres the Selke comes to light. Behind the Albrechtshaus, the Duchy of Anhalt is at its end. The Selketal-Stieg continues through the nature reserve Oberes Selketal to the Mühlteich in Güntersberge. Strassberg stands for a long mining tradition. Next you reach Alexisbad, the first seaside resort of Anhalt. This is where the cliff path begins. It connects several rock formations. Memorials and viewpoints allow you to discover new and historical things again and again. On the pioneer trail, you pass through a tunnel to the Mägdetrappe. From here you can see the Selketal in all its beauty upwards. Through the production of iron works of art, Mägdesprung became known far beyond the Harz Mountains in the 19th century. The Selketalbahn leaves the valley and puffs over the mountains towards Gernrode to Quedlinburg. Passing the Carlswerk, the trail leads through the narrowest part of the valley. At the Selkemühle, a detour to the castle ruin Anhalt is a good idea. The valley now continues and shows itself from its sweet side. For 8 km the trail passes through a nature reserve with unique flora and fauna. The next destination could be Burg Falkenstein, combined with a short steep ascent. The Selketal-Stieg continues to Meisdorf with its baroque castle. Now the trail goes to Ballenstedt, always with a wide view of the Harz foothills and impressive sandstone cliffs. Castle and castle park Ballenstedt invite you to linger. Passing the Roseburg garden monument, we continue along the Harz rim to Gernrode. The more than 1,000-year-old Collegiate Church of St. Cyriacus has remained almost unchanged since the Ottonian era. The panoramic trail leads to Bad Suderode and on to Quarmbeck. Soon the castle hill of Quedlinburg appears with the sublime Collegiate Church in the field of view. Through the Brühlpark you will reach the old town of Quedlinburg – the end point of the Selketal-Stieg.

Cirque de Gavarnie is a popular hiking destination in the Pyrenees, and one of its most beautiful. Called "the colosseum of nature" by one Victor Hugo, the Cirque is a ring of sheer granite mountain walls enclosing a picture-perfect green valley. It's astounding before you add in three-tier Gavarnie Falls pouring over a 922-foot drop.he highest falls, la Grand Cascade de Gavarnie, has two tiers, plunges 1,385 feet and is the tallest in France.

The greatest pleasure comes from hiking the trail to the top, smelling the scents, listening to the sounds and marveling at the changing scenery. The trail ascends gradually and is a fairly easy, 1- or 1.5 hour hike one way. Donkeys and horses are available for hire if you prefer that mode of travel.

At the top, a casual restaurant awaits.

Gangkhar Puensum is probably the highest unclimbed mountain in the world, although some people have tried to scale this 3,000-metre peak in Bhutan—an unusual destination worth adding to your bucket list. Like many tall mountains, this one is unmapped—although unlike other mountains, it remains uncharted for spiritual reasons. To locals, some areas in the mountains are the refuge of centuries-old buddhist saints and the mountains themselves homes to gods and goddesses. Although climbers hoping to scale tall peaks like this one could use Google Earth to get an idea of what they’re in for, BBC Future points out many consider that cheating. If you think that’s amazing, check out more of the world’s most remote locations.

The hike up to Lantau Peak is as challenging as it is scenic. At 934 metres above sea level, Lantau Peak offers some of the most breathtaking views of Lantau Island and its surroundings! But then again, you may be out of breath hiking up this peak. From on top of Lantau Peak, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of Lantau’s best beaches, the Big Buddha, Tung Chung, Hong Kong Airport, and even Castle Peak, and Hong Kong Island! There are a few hiking trails to the summit of Lantau Peak, the easiest of which is the one on Lantau Trail Section 3, between Pak Kung Au to Ngong Ping. The other more difficult trails include the ones from West Dog Teeth, and Middle Dog Teeth, collectively known as the Dog Teeth Range (“Kau Nga Ling”).

High-altitude rest area (approx. 850 meters) on the Dreifürstenstein mountain with shelter and information board. The Albsteig leads directly past and the inclined hiker can enjoy a break with a wonderful view. From here you have a great view of Hohenzollern Castle, Mössingen, Tübingen.
According to legend, the three ruling princes of Hohenzollern - Hechingen, Württemberg and Fürstenberg - met here earlier on the mountain. They wanted to take part in the social gatherings, each for themselves, but only on their territory, which is why, as history tells, a large stone table was built in the distant past - which many today, however, are looking for in vain. Now the three princes, each in their own area, could take a seat and enjoy hearty food and drink. Fortunately, this narrow-mindedness no longer exists today, and hikers from all over the world take a break here.

One of the most beautiful hikes in the Pollino Park discovering the realm of the Giant Loricated Pines at more than 2,000 meters above sea level. It is an almost loop trail that has as its destination the Garden of the Gods near Serra di Crispo.

A locationà of inestimable naturalistic, historical and anthropological value. A place shrouded in the silence of the largest forests in’Italy of beech and with the presence of the’exceptional Loricate Pine. In fact, in this area of the park there are among the mostù ancient, twisted and spectacular specimens of loricate pine in’the entire protected area.

Giant, “white-skinned” trunks gleam in the daylight, witnesses to the time, slow, weathering to which they have been subjected for hundreds of years. They play the role of witnesses to bygone eras, ice ages and men who for years spent much of their time in the’shadow of these giants of nature, watching and defending their herds of horses and calves.

But this place is also located at the end of a long walk on ancient paths traveled by soldiers, brigands, mushroom hunters, and scholars who have gone to these peaks over the years, and it takes the curious hiker back to the communication routes of the Pollino peoples. Beech trees, clearings, wide vistas, spring waters, streams, plateaus, rocks and silence: these are the “ingredients” of one of the must-do hikes in the largest park inù Italy. The’hike starts from the Sanctuary of Madonna del Pollino. The Chaberton Pass (2,671 m) dominates at the same time the Italian Susa Valley and the French Briançon Valley. Until 1947 it was in Italian territory.
Easy excursion on a very panoramic peak, on which there are the remains of the fort destroyed at the beginning of the Second World War.
The fort can be visited with the necessary precautions, also for the constant presence of ice inside the buildings.
It's a very long hike (15 km round trip) with a good difference in height, but it's made easier by the military road that climbs with a constant slope and never too steeply.

It takes 4-5 hours of hiking over a glacier to reach the peak of Volcano Villarrica at 2.860 m. Snow-covered Villarrica, one of Chile's most active volcanoes, rises above the lake and town of the same name. It erupts basaltic lava and is one of the few permanently active volcanoes in the world, with frequent strombolian activity and sometimes a small lava lake present in its summit crater. The last eruption of the volcano was in 2015 and almost 4.000 persons had to be evacuated.

The Mount Rinjani Trekking is an absolute must for all adventurous and physically active travelers who are in Bali or Lombok.
Mount Rinjani (3.726 m) is a volcano located on the island Lombok, west of Bali.Within its huge 50 km² caldera sits the crater lake Segara Anak (Child of the Sea). Eruptions within the caldera have formed a new small cone called appropriately enough, Gunung Baru (New Mountain). Segara Anak has a natural hot spring.
The mountain and its satellites form the Mount Rinjani National Park (Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani) – officially 41,000 hectares within the park boundaries and a further 66,000 hectares of protected forest outside.
In 2008, the Indonesian government proposed to UNESCO that Mount Rinjani be one of the world. The lower and mid levels of the mountain are quite heavily forested. Above the tree line though the slopes are barren and rugged scree slopes and volcanic rock. The views of the crater lake are quite breath-taking from the caldera rim, as is the sunrise. From the absolute peak you can see Bali to the west and Sumbawa to the east.

Black Crab Trail

If you are looking for an easy walk, to be done in all seasons in about two hours and immersed in nature, you have found it: it is the path of the black crab that leads from the center of Castelplanio to the hamlet of Macine. The path winds adjacent to the small ditch, has a length of just over 2 km each way (so consider about 5 km between round trip) with a drop of about 200 meters. You cross the river and riparian woodland where the vegetation is impressive, with rare tree species such as the white ontàno and flower species ranging from narcissus to wild orchids, with an imposing presence of the farfaraccio and hepatica to the beccalunga and the navel of Venus. Worth mentioning is the ancient Fonte del Coppo (18th century), the first source of water supply in Castelplanio. The water of the perennial ditch, the quality of which has improved a lot since 1995 due to the cessation of discharges, is actually a small river to be discovered, with waterfalls and mini-lakes, almost unknown and very suggestive because they are surrounded and protected by a luxuriant and imposing river wood.
The place is quite humid: avoid it after the rain. The path is also suitable for mountain bikes.
You can either leave your car near the town hall of Castelplanio and go down, or in the hamlet of Macine and go up. (Here you will find more parking areas).

One of the most popular tours starting from Antigua is the Pacaya Volcano hike.
The volcano is still active and during the trek you may happen to walk through rivers of glowing lava. Pacaya Volcano is an active complex volcano in Guatemala, which first erupted about 23,000 years ago and has erupted at least 23 times since the Spanish conquest of Guatemala. It rises to an elevation of 2,552 metres (8,870 ft).

Moraduccio waterfall

The Moraduccio Waterfall is located in the town of the same name, between the towns of Castel del Rio and Fiorenzuola. For those coming from Emilia-Romagna, it is necessary to reach the city of Imola and from there continue in the direction of Tossignano, then Castel del Rio. After half an hour's drive you will reach Moraduccio. From Florence - Prato you will need to reach the town of Fiorenzuola and from there continue along the Strada Montanara Imolese.
There are few car parks available. Close to the border sign between Emilia Romagna and Tuscany there is an open space for about ten cars.
Grab your rucksacks and start descending towards the waterfall.
The more you go down, the more the sound of falling water becomes clear, you turn the corner and there it is, like a Constable painting, three-dimensional and in motion. The waterfall, in all its beauty, never ceases to replenish the natural pool that over time has been formed under it.
The water is as clear as few: you can see the fish even five meters away. On one side there is the ridge of rocks and vegetation scattered here and there, lush bushes and yellow flowers. On the other there is the rather wide shore made of stones and shady areas because of the trees that surround it.
The beaches of pebbles smoothed by the flowing waters and the scenic waterfall of Rio dei Briganti, known as Cascata di Moraduccio, which flows into the Santerno, make this the perfect place for those looking for a peaceful picnic in nature, sheltered from the summer heat, without disdaining a dip in the Santerno.
For those who love walking, crossing the bridge over the river and after a climb of about one kilometre, you can reach the charming abandoned village of Castiglioncello.

The Dardagna waterfalls, together with the sanctuary of Madonna dell'Acero, are inside the Regional Park of Corno alle Scale, in an area bordering on Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany, a perfect place for trekking near Bologna. After passing the villages of Lizzano in Belvedere and Vidiciatico, the road climbs in hairpin bends in the middle of the woods and passes an evocative stone building watched over by an ancient maple tree: the Sanctuary of Madonna dell'Acero. Here we are! There is a very special legend linked to the sanctuary, and I want to briefly tell you about it.
Let's go back in time, in a remote summer day. Two young shepherds, one of them deaf-mute, are suddenly caught in a blizzard, just as they are grazing with their animals.
The two children find shelter under a large maple tree and there, while the storm rages, they become witnesses of a miracle: the Madonna appears to them, giving hearing and speech to the deaf-mute shepherd boy.
It was the 5th of August and the maple tree was immediately consecrated as a place of worship to the Virgin. A small stone temple was quickly built to protect the tree that was the scene of the sacred apparition. An image of Mary was affixed to its trunk.
However, the parish priest of Rocca Corneta, wishing to celebrate the sacred event in the presence of the bishop, decided to transfer the effigy to the parish. He could not imagine that this new residence would not be appreciated by the Virgin herself! On the day set aside for the festivities, in fact, the sacred image disappeared from the church. She returned to her beloved maple tree, leaving the marks of her passage on all the tree trunks placed along the road.
Today, the sacred temple of the apparition no longer exists, and in its place you can observe, and visit, the Sanctuary of Madonna dell'Acero. Destination of pilgrimage, under its main altar you can admire the remains of the ancient tree.
After visiting the Sanctuary, follow the indications for the CAI 331 path which starts behind the building and which, immersed in a shady and relaxing beech wood, goes up the course of the Dardagna torrent, accompanying you, stage after stage, under and over the spectacular jumps formed by the Dardagna (the path is also called "path of the seven waterfalls"). Reaching the first big jump is very easy: the path is wide, often downhill and suitable also for children and elderly people. After the first jump (15 meters high) the path (333 CAI) that goes up on the left of the waterfall starts to be steeper and is considered of medium difficulty. The steps and the fences make the walk accessible to everyone, but certainly for small children can be challenging and difficult. After the last big jump (30 meters high) you will reach a small waterfall: here the path splits. Almost everybody takes the path 337 on the left, coming out at the height of Lago del Cavone. Here you can eat in the restaurant overlooking the emerald-coloured artificial lake (Lago del Cavone) and then go down along the forest road or back along the path you just took until you reach the Sanctuary again.

Located just 90 minutes by car from Ajaccio airport, Les Calanques de Piana is one of France's best natural wonders.
The French writer Guy de Maupassant wrote that the Calanques de Piana were one of the wonders of Corsica and even one of the wonders of France. You can ramble in this incredible landscape and several trails have been created for hikers. The most popular as seen in the above photo, is the path "Towards the Castle", recognizable by the piles of stones left by hikers.
The Calanchi di Piana are real stacks of red granite up to 300/400 metres high (more or less like the Eiffel Tower), very impressive seen from the sea, but also from above. If you visit this wonderful place by sea, you will find many caves and some bays where you can stop for a swim: the water is crystal clear, turquoise, but often cold. The scenery is composed of the red of the porphyry and the blue of the basalt, rocks of all shapes and caves that recall the outline of islands such as Sardinia and Corsica.

A very nice trekking in the Reserve of Mount Cofano

A very nice trekking route is the one you can do in the Reserve of Monte Cofano. Along the coast to the prehistoric cave.
A route immersed in the wonderful colours of Sicily, from the blue of the sea to the pink-red of the dolomite and the green of the Mediterranean scrub, to arrive at the natural reserve of Monte Cofano.
The route is very long and recommended only for trained hikers (but you can stop on the beaches and in the incredible coves that follow one another on the coast). It will amaze you with its colors and the beautiful coastal views, with all shades of color of the sea, which blends with the green of the low Mediterranean scrub.
The backdrop is Mount Cofano, a mountain that juts out into the sea, a massif of dolomite rock, which divides the Gulf of Cofano from the Gulf of Bonagia. All around the pink-red rock soars towards the sky contrasting with the blue and green.
The stretch of coastline that you will walk along hides geological rarities, peculiarities, cavities and cultural emergencies that will be revealed by the Waypoints that you will find along the way.
In Baia Santa Margherita you will find a beautiful beach of light-coloured sand, sometimes pink, set between the rocky coastline: here the seabed slopes gently, allowing the sea to change its hues from turquoise to deep blue...but don't give in to the temptation to swim straight away, because a long road awaits you!
A little further on, you will find what remains of the Tonnara di Cofano, an enchanting fishing village that stands on the gulf, at the foot of the mountain, dominated by the magnificent coastal tower of the '500. A place shrouded in silence and dwarf palms where you will find coves of clear, transparent water.
Continuing beyond the Passo della Zita, to which is linked a particular local legend, you will reach the final destination of the route: a large and evocative prehistoric cave, at the entrance of which reigns a thick vegetation of dwarf palms.
The return journey, of similar duration to the outward journey, takes about 4 hours (at a slow pace).

Brasstown Bald is the highest point in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is located in the northeastern part of the state in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the border of Towns and Union counties south of the town of Hiawassee. The mountain is known to native Cherokee people as Enotah. In the Cherokee language, the word used for “Green Place” is incredibly similar to the word for “Brass,” and the untrained ear of the white men who came to re-settle the land confused the two terms, changing the description of the mountain’s natural beauty to its current brassy misnomer.
Please note, some GPS units may display an incorrect location for Brasstown Bald since there is no physical address for the facility. We suggest using the longitude and latitude coordinates for the intersection of Highway 180 and Spur 180 which will provide the most accurate GPS directions. They are N34.847894, W83.798567. While these coordinates are accurate, this is no guarantee your GPS unit will calculate a route accurately.

The most interesting part of the canal is to the south, along the Quai de Jemmapes and the Quai de Valmy, very picturesque with their high iron footbridges. On both sides of the canal, which is very popular with young people, there are designer shops, cultural centers and dozens of cafes and bistros perfect for the aperitif hour. Even in the side streets of this area, where you can also admire some street art, a growing number of trendy cafes and elegant boutiques are springing up!

The original path at The Gobbins was opened in 1902, and immediately captivated visitors. The Gobbins was created by Irish railway engineer Berkeley Deane Wise. The Gobbins is a cliff-face path at Islandmagee, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, on the Causeway Coastal Route. This dramatic and challenging cliff-face path combines spectacular tubular and suspension bridges, caves, steps, and tunnels carved through the rock. Follow the curves of curious geology to immerse yourself in this exhilarating journey and discover the ancient stories and fascinating heritage of this unique attraction. One of The Gobbins path's greatest champions was filmmaker, photographer, historian and lecturer, the late John H Lennon, from Co. Down. Lennon made numerous surveys of the old path; extensively researched methods to build new bridges and even made two films about it. So impressive was his work both the army and navy offered to help his proposed restoration.
Today visitors are whisked from the Visitor Centre by bus to the start of the path where they can, once again, experience the feeling of 'walking on water'. As you navigate the edge of the North Coast, watch the water rise up to greet you and immerse yourself in breathtakingly beautiful views, keeping an eye out for frequently-spotted pods of dolphins and porpoises.

A Wonderful Pilgrimage: San Vili Pathway

Lesser known, but no less meaningful and beautiful, is the Cammino San Vili or the Way of St. Vigilio that passes through the North of Italy. The Cammino San Vili is one of the best pilgrimages in Italy.
While there are so many pilgrimage routes in Europe, Italy is a top choice for pilgrimage, with so many incredible saints of the Catholic Church and other traditions originating there. The Cammino San Vili is located in Trentino. The Cammino di San Vili is named after Saint Vigilio, bishop and patron saint of Trento, who, according to the legend, evangelised the inhabitants of the settlements on this way in the 4th century. The Way runs along the breath-taking mountains of the Brenta Group, reveals wonderful natural landscapes where water and stone intertwine, goes through fascinating villages with ancient traditions and excellent local food.
SAT (Alpine Society of Trentino) is an alpine association operating in the Italian province of Trento, which cares for the signage and maintenance of more than thousand paths, including fixed rope routes and equipped trails, for about of 5300 km. It also owns and manages bivouacs, mountain refuges and shelters throughout the whole territory. The San Vili Pathway was opened in 1988 by the SAT, whose members operate voluntarily by cleaning and keeping the path safe, caring for red and white signs dotted along the route to help keep hikers on track.he San Vili trek is a walk through the valleys of Rendena, Giudicarie, Banale, Valle dei Laghi heading to the city of Trento, its final destination. The route twists and turns along small roads and minor paths, offering scenic views and unforgettable glimpses of alpine landscapes and tiny villages.
Due to its mountain character, although it never reaches high altitudes and does not present particular technical difficulties, the path requires a minimum of athletic preparation, in addition to appropriate mountain clothing suitable for changing weather, comfortable boots and water reserve. The route is well signaled, but it may be convenient to download the maps with the tracks.
It is possible to do the Walk on foot or by bicycle.
As a walker, you can choose between two options: a LOW and a HIGH Itinerary. The first crosses the villages in the valley floor, and is therefore lower and flatter; the second one, instead, walks you through mountainous area passages, generally higher, and requiring more inclined walking.
The SAT trails are 300, 613 and 627.
Along the San Vili Trail, between Lake Lamar and Bocca Paloni, there is a small stretch where the path might seem not fully safe for inexperienced hikers. However, those who do not wish to walk along it can take two easier and shorter paths – n°615 and then n° 611
The nature is pristine. The views of the mountains are unspeakable. For me, the highlight of walking the San Vili Pathway was the many beautiful, painted churches along the trail. The Church of San Stefano in Pinzolo was one of my favorite churches!

Ireland: Lough Derg Way

Walking the Lough Derg Way is an opportunity to witness the unspoiled beauty of Ireland's Hidden Heartlands along a 64km trail.
Beginning at the tourist office in Limerick City – behind the Hunt Museum – the Lough Derg Way stretches along winding, circuitous routes alongside the River Shannon up through to the marina in Dromineer on Lough Derg.
The route is a walker's paradise. Climb the rolling hills of Clonlara, and onto the visit the village of O'Briensbridge. It makes its way across the river to the ancient town of Killaloe – once the home of the 11th-century High King of Ireland, Brian Boru. Rest up with coffee and pizza in the Italian deli, Ponte Vecchio, or discover the heritage of the town at St Flannan's Cathedral, including its awe-inspiring early Christian oratory.
The southern section of the trail is made up of quaint canals and riverside passages, offering a glimpse into an often-unseen aspect of Ireland's landscape. Wander across the gentle, rolling trails or just sit and watch fishermen patiently cast out from the canal banks. The northern end – largely comprised of country roads – is a great place to relax in the ebb and flow of country life.
The trail winds up in the charming port town of Dromineer. Seize the opportunity to dip into the glistening waters of Lough Derg after a pleasant walk. There are plenty of water sports available to soothe tired feet. Savour a doorstop sandwich made with famous locally-baked bread while watching the sun settle on the harbour at Lough Derg House and Lake Café.
Explore the town’s castle ruins and relax with a dram in The Whiskey Still.

The historic Beara Breifne Way begins in West Cork and weaves up through the Midlands ending in Blacklion in County Cavan. The walking trail is constantly being improved and expanded so it’s a simple and enjoyable route to navigate. Along the way, you’re never far from an interesting pit-stop or welcoming meal. The incomparable views and scenery speak to something ancient. Enjoy the untouched Irish landscape preserved in the face of centuries of subsequent modernisation.
Walking along this world-class trail, you’ll be following the 14-day march undertaken by O'Sullivan Beara in 1603. In the aftermath of the Battle of Kinsale, he marched the survivors north looking for help and is believed to have fought in numerous skirmishes and ambushes along the way.
The core ethos of the Beara Breifne Way is collaboration. Sixty community groups orchestrated the walking trails making it one of the largest community projects ever undertaken in Ireland.

Within the borders of Sequoia/Kings Canyon is Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the United States contiguous with its 4,417 meters. Located on the border between the Californian counties of Inyo and Tulare, its southern slope is part of the territory of Sequoia National Park. It is named after the 19th century Californian geologist Josiah Whitney. It was first climbed in 1873 by Charles Begole, A.H. Johnson and John Lucas.
Curiously, it is only about 120 km as the crow flies from the lowest point in the continental United States, Death Valley (86 meters below sea level).

Snæfellsjökull is an Icelandic glacier that covers the Snæfell volcano. Often this name is also given to the volcano to distinguish it from the other two reliefs that have the same name. It is located in the westernmost part of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in Iceland. Sometimes it can be seen from the city of Reykjavík, beyond the bay of Faxaflói, from a distance of 120 kilometers. The mountain is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Iceland, mainly due to the novel Journey to the Center of the Earth by the French author Jules Verne, in which the protagonist finds the passage leading to the center of the Earth to Snæfellsjökull.

As you ascend through the dense tropical forest you are enveloped in a dark light and a crisp breeze, as you climb the steps, the clouds seem to slowly disperse (also because it is generally recommended to start the ascent at around 5 a.m. to enjoy the sunrise on arrival) until once at the top you are rewarded by a breathtaking view of Oahu, which is perhaps the most beautiful part of the hike.

Lake Cadagno is a special lake, mysterious because it consists of two overlapping lakes and precious because this peculiarity makes it a unique ecosystem.
The upper part, in contact with the atmosphere, is a normal alpine lake fed by the melting waters of the snow. The water descends on granite rocks and is poor in mineral salts, therefore lighter (crystalline water).
The lower layer of the lake receives neither water nor oxygen from the outside world, but is fed by springs below the lake. The water that flows through the dolomite is enriched with mineral salts (sulphur, calcium, phosphates, ammonium, magnesium) and enters the lake from springs below the lake (sulphurous springs). The salt content determines a higher density of the water, which stratifies in the lower part.

White Mountains’ National Park is the only national park in Crete. It centres around the Samariá gorge, at an altitude of 1,200m and continues down to Ayia Rouméli, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Along with the surrounding slopes and a number of smaller gorges branching off from it, Samaria Gorge forms the whole of the area designated as a national park, a status that offers protection to over 450 species of plant and animal, 70 of which are endemic to Crete. In the prefecture of Chania (also written “Hania”), the Samaria gorge is the longest in Europe (total length 16km), and one of the most impressive gorges in Greece. It starts from Xylóskalo, at an altitude of 1,230m. The width of the gorge is 150m at its widest point and 3m at its narrowest.
The walk down the Samaria Gorge from the Omalos plateau to Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea is very tough but the beautiful views and rewarding finish at the beach town are well worth it. Try to avoid midsummer as the heat it tough to bear. The walk takes between four and seven hours.

The Promenade of Love, in Furore

The walk of Love, in Furore, is a short but intense path. It starts from the district of S. Elia in Furore, on the Amalfi Coast, and proceeds for five hundred meters above sea level. It starts with a wide view, on the sea of the divine Coast and opens the path with a bronze representing two lovers. Here the step becomes intense also because it is absolutely mandatory to do it in two and with the loved one.

At the beginning you immediately meet some majolica tiles with phrases that invite you to reflect on the love for life, for your loved one and for nature. The reflections silence the lovers and transport them in a moment of introspection where memories are enkindled and promises are confirmed.
Phrases of Loves tormented like storms or accompanied by "trembling creaks of cicadas", Loves compared to the blue sea with the energy of the sun of the Coast, Love as the only reason for life.
The more they read the more, the more the lovers shake hands tightly and wrap themselves tightly around the waist. They exchange a kiss, they stop to read the last majolica with the sensations of the landscape, the scents and the sound of the beautiful words suggested by that state of mind. The majolica tiles on the final hillock, in the middle of a very panoramic pitch, invite you to reflect on the kind of Love you feel and live. From maternal Love to free Love, from burning Love to spiritual Love.
The invitation to leave the memory of the moment here and then find it intact, guarded for eternity', as if entrusted to a new small dwelling of one's own feelings.
Here every smile melts away, every look in love glitters because it is before a truth much greater than the words that one's own mouth can express. The promise is confirmed without any sentence and just a glance is enough to understand that you are on the right path, both on the Walk of Love.

CIUDAD PERDIDA, STORY OF AN ASCENT
Ciudad-Perdida-Colombia09

In the heart of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, surrounded by a dense tropical jungle, is the Ciudad Perdida (The Lost City), an ancient Teyuna sanctuary dating back to the 8th century AD.
Rediscovered only in 1972 by a body of explorers, the Ciudad Perdida is today the most famous archaeological site in Colombia, protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, and considered a sacred place by the Kogi, the Wiwa and the Arhuaco, the three ethnic groups living at different altitudes in the Sierra.
All the territory surrounding Ciudad Perdida is under indigenous jurisdiction, and consequently the flow of visitors is managed by the indigenous people.
The only way to visit Ciudad Perdida is to walk for 4/5 days, depending on the package chosen, through the tropical jungle, starting from a height of about 800 meters to reach 1200 meters above sea level.
The route is far from simple, and to face it in the best way you need to be prepared and equipped.
