The Villaggio dei Bimbi (Children's Village), as this place is called, is located in the middle of a forest. The wagons include 16 bedrooms, 4 storerooms, 4 refectories, 3 exhibition halls with paintings, ceramics, sculptures and photographs and a TV room. Very interesting are also the wagon "Once upon a time" and the wagon "Toyland". Outside this very special Piedmontese village there is a playground with swings and slides for children, a soccer field and a volleyball court where tournaments are organized, a park, an open-air church, a fishing pond and a covered area with long tables where guests can all have lunch together. But how did this unusual and fairy-tale place come into being? It was between 1953 and 1960. In Domodossola, a town near the border, many emigrants arrived, mainly from southern Italy. Almost all of them worked in Switzerland, where it was not possible, by law, to bring their families with them. For many of them it is a drama to separate from their children and many, very many, don't know who to entrust them to. It is a real problem and the Capuchin friars are looking for a way to accommodate the many children and young people who are forced to stay in the city, far from their families. The first solution was a house in Gravegna, but it was granted for a short time. Then, at last, the Casa del Fanciullo was founded which managed to accommodate the children of the emigrants. But what about the summer? Even the children of hardship had a right to leisure and entertainment. And so a solution was sought. A piece of land was found in Baceno Croveo Osso. The owners, out of love for the children, generously granted it to the friars. The place is very beautiful, immersed in nature, the ideal place for these young energies. But how to equip it? One thinks of tents or a hut. Then there was a chance meeting with Scalfaro, the Minister of Transport, and a bizarre idea came up and became a request: "Would you give us a train? It sounds like a joke, but it's not. A project is emerging. "It would serve to create a village to accommodate children who live far from their parents, to offer them a place for a holiday, a bit of joy and serenity...". It's done. The carriages are really coming. Everyone in a carriage! The Children's Train is born Today the village "Children's Train" is still run by the Capuchin friars and some volunteers. The park - which covers an area of 210 hectares - has been divided into three paths: "basic" (2.5 Km 1.5-2 hours), "main" (5 Km 3-4 hours) and "panoramic" (10 Km, 5-6 hours), all well marked and in excellent condition. Along the routes there are explanatory panels in English that give information on the various types of trees and plants: the park contains in fact 1600 different plant species among which 8000 specimens of rhododendrons. Howard Finster’s visionary artistic site, Paradise Garden.Reverend Howard Finster, a self proclaimed “Man of Visions”, Finster was one of America’s most widely known and prolific self-taught artists producing over 46,991 pieces of art before his death in 2001. He saw himself as a sacred artist, tirelessly recording his visionary prophesies and providing glimpses of a celestial outer space world that God revealed to him. These visionary journeys were very real for Finster, providing a limitless variety of images for his creative endeavors. Born in rural Alabama in 1916, Finster went on to become a preacher, tent revivalist, and “master of 22 different trades” before building his roadside tribute to inventors the Plant Farm Museum. Later dubbed “Paradise Garden,” this rock and junk encrusted wonderland became the focus of Finster’s life work. In 1976, however, this focus shifted. As he was using his fingers to apply paint to a refurbished bicycle, Finster noticed that the paint smudge on the tip of his finger had formed a human face. A voice spoke to him, saying, “paint sacred art.” Finster began churning out thousands of sermon-laden artworks with subjects ranging from historical characters and popular culture icons like Elvis Presley to evangelistic fantasy landscapes and futuristic cities. Most works are meticulously coated in Finster’s own hand-lettered words and Biblical verse. Paradise Garden, a ramshackle compound of curated chaos filled with murals, bike parts, concrete sculptures bedazzled with found objects, and a painted Cadillac. Don't worry, no one has modified Piazza San Marco or one of the city's campielli (small squares): we're talking about Parco San Giuliano in Mestre. The area is actually located on the mainland, but overlooks the lagoon and is connected to Venice by the nearby Ponte della Libertà bridge. Inaugurated in 2004 thanks to the reclamation works that allowed the municipality of Mestre to recover a large swamp, the huge urban garden extends for about 74 hectares. Since its opening Mestre and Venetians have rediscovered this once abandoned area and take advantage of it every day for sports, picnics and concerts and events. San Giuliano Park in Mestre is in fact used for various events and those with a green thumb and an interest in flora will find many interesting ideas in the park. Inside its huge open spaces, in fact, there are dozens of trees of different origins. From the red maple to the Siberian elm, passing through ash trees, oaks and white hornbeams, each season takes on a different colour thanks to the leaves of these shrubs. Various types of butterflies, amphibians and birds often make a stop in the small lakes of the area. Two sculptures by the artist Toni Benetton, called respectively "La grande colonna" (The big column) and "Le Anime" (The Souls), are located inside the park. The first, originally presented at the Venice Biennale in 1986, is located near the infopoint and represents a long iron tower. The neoclassical style park owes its name to the labyrinth in the park. The park and especially the labyrinth is ideal for a visit with children, but on other days it is also an oasis of tranquility in the hectic city of Barcelona.In 1792 the Italian architect Domenico Bagutti was commissioned to build a cypress labyrinth in this park, with a statue of Eros in the middle. Unfortunately, in 1942 part of the buildings (the caves, the Chinese pagoda, two small bridges and the steps of the riding school) were destroyed and the trees were cut down: the destruction was further aggravated at the end of the Second World War, when heaps of debris were placed on the area of the riding school, thus raising the basin by about two metres; in the meantime the collapse of the ground in the caves had caused the lowering of the hill, completely upsetting the scenography conceived in the original project. The Park was acquired by the Municipality in 1958, which opened it to the public; the recently completed restoration work has recovered, as far as possible, the original layout and structures and reintroduced some ancient and rare plants. The park is a jewel that dominates the city, to be visited in every season for a regenerating break in the middle of nature. It is an almost "secret" place, a wonderful garden that smells of other times. The park was also awarded the title of most beautiful park in Italy by the National Competition of Parks and Gardens. It is located in the heart of the Chiadino-Rozzoi district: 50,000 square metres surrounding the rustic chalet commissioned to engineer Giuseppe Sforzi by Baron Pasquale Revoltella. It has nothing to envy to the parks of the great European villas, even if its dimensions are certainly reduced: the caretaker's house, the church in Karst stone, the gloriette, the parish house, the old stables, the glass and cast iron greenhouse, an Italian garden and the Revoltella's chalet.Pasquale Revoltella, an entrepreneur and financier of Venetian origin, born in 1795 and died in 1869, was one of the most authoritative and representative figures of imperial Trieste, where he played a leading role both in economic life and in political events. He arrived in Trieste when he was only two years old, in 1797, he belonged to a family of merchants who had left Venice probably because of the fall of the Republic. He began working at a very young age and immediately showed himself to be capable and enterprising. After a long apprenticeship in the commercial enterprise of Teodoro Necker, the Swiss consul in Trieste, in 1835 he opened a firm of timber and grain imports which quickly became successful. At the same time he began his career as a financier: he was one of the first shareholders of Assicurazioni Generali (founded in 1831) and immediately joined the board of directors of Lloyd Austriaco (founded in 1833). Strongly attached to his adopted city, Revoltella invested many financial resources in philanthropic and educational initiatives: in 1850 he founded the drawing school, in 1853 he donated an altar to the Church of S. Maria Maggiore, in 1857 he promoted the construction of the "Ferdinandeo" (a monumental building dedicated to the Archduke, brother of the Emperor) and the erection of the Teatro Armonia. Inside, it includes the Roseto di S. Giovanni, inaugurated in 2009, an enchanting and very well-kept place, rich in roses arranged according to systematic, historical but also ornamental criteria. Realized with the collaboration of the Cooperativa Agricola San Pantaleone, thanks to the financing of the Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia, it was designed by Vladimir Vremec, with the intention of creating a contemporary garden; it includes almost 5000 varieties of roses, both ancient and modern, including some that are not found on the market, obtained from English, German, French, Dutch, American and Japanese hybridisers. The Rose Garden of San Giovanni Park is certainly one of the largest in Italy and Europe.... Entering from the lower entrance of the Park, an ideal path winds through the paths, stairs and tree-lined avenues, in a succession of plants and ancient roses to reach the upper part, where there are modern roses. As a tribute to the era of construction of the former Psychiatric Hospital, a collection of Liberty roses has also been created, placed in symmetrical and specular flowerbeds on either side of the path accompanied by arches covered with climbing roses of the period. The garden has a French rococo style plant. The wide tree-lined avenues are bordered by flowering Agapanthus and roses, and in some places are surmounted by hedges of Taxus baccata shaped like an arch. Among the species that characterize the whole, also palms (Phoenix dactilifera) and peonies. Many elements are worth mentioning: the avenue of umbrellas, an example of eighteenth-century ars topiary used here to shape the armrests and backs of stone seats with boxwood hedges; the elliptical fishpond with two adjacent masonry buffets and fountains of various kinds.
