Every year in the run-up to Christmas, the enchanting medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber is transformed into a fairytale setting. For over 500 years, one of Germany’s most popular Christmas markets, the "Knight’s Market", has been held in this fabulous setting. Visitors from all over the world can enjoy the charming atmosphere of the market. The scent of roasted sausages wafts through the streets and mingles with the aroma of Franconian white wine mulled wine. According to tradition, the Christmas market is solemnly opened on the Friday before the first Sunday in Advent.
The famous "Christmas village" of Käthe Wohlfahrt, which is open all year round, is located right next to the Christmas market and during the Christmas season is a real magnet for visitors, a must-see destination where you can breathe in the magical Christmas atmosphere even when the weather is bad. Thanks to the large selection of items (over 30,000) and the stunning decorations, it has been impressing visitors of all ages since 1981. Inside, the miniature reconstruction of a Franconian town square, illuminated by over 196,000 lights, with old half-timbered houses and, in the middle, a 5.5-metre high Christmas tree decorated with over 1,000 glass ornaments, is a true wonder that makes shopping even more enjoyable. High-quality items from the "Rothenburg Christmas market workshop" are available exclusively at Käthe Wohlfahrt. They are produced using only selected raw materials (glass, wood or tin) and with particular attention to detail.
On the first floor of Käthe Wohlfahrt’s "Christmas village" is the "German Christmas Museum", 250 square metres in which visitors can take a journey back in time through the history of Christmas decorations, from the first Christmas trees to those of the 1950s. More than 5000 historical objects.
