Roque Nublo is considered one of the largest natural rocks in the world. Of considerable value to the islanders, this rock of volcanic origin rises eighty metres from its base and 1,813 metres above sea level. An ancient place of worship for the Aborigines, the entire surrounding area was declared a protected natural area in 1987, and a rural park seven years later. Its imposing presence is surpassed in height only by the Peak of Las Nieves, with 1,949 metres, the highest point in Gran Canaria.
