The Church of Santa Agnese in Agone is the most prominent building in Piazza Navona, existing since the eighth century was erected for the cult of St. Agnes directly where tradition reports that the saint child was exposed naked to the pillory and there was the prodigious growth of her hair to cover her.
The present appearance, like almost all the rest of Piazza Navona, is due to Pope Innocent X Pamphili who commissioned the entire square, home of the ancient circus of Domitian, to Carlo and Girolamo Rainaldi.
