Angel of Grief or Angel of Grief is a marble and stone sculpture. The rules of the Catholic Church forbade the burial of non-Catholics (Protestants, Jews and Orthodox, but also suicides and actors) in consecrated ground, these people after death were rejected by the Christian community in the city and were buried outside the city walls, or at the extreme edge of them. The work is, in fact, located in the monumental non-Catholic cemetery of Rome.
The angel is kneeling in front of a pedestal, with his head resting on his arm, crying with his face hidden. The result of remarkable realism has made this image famous, and it is not surprising that it has become a model funeral monument copied all over the world, making it popular especially in the United States, where there are many reproductions of the work.
