The Happy Rizzi House, also known as the happiest house in the world, is a stunning work of art by American James Rizzi
This unique building is located in Germany, in the town of Braunschweig, in Lower Saxony. It is the work of New York artist James Rizzi, a well-known exponent of pop art. This building is a real "explosion of color" in the small Ackerhof square, in the central Magnivertel, the district of St. Magnus.
The Happy Rizzi House is technically a complex of buildings, including an old ducal residence. What makes it special, however, are the numerous colored graffiti that completely cover it and remind of comic book drawings.
The psychedelic cluster of buildings was not immediately accepted by the surrounding city, however, as the cacophony of colors of the tall buildings was and is in direct visual opposition to both the business district on the one hand and old world European architecture on the other.
However, the awkward faces with irregular spherical eyes (which are also windows) were eventually accepted as a unique and important part of the landscape, acting as the unofficial boundary between the two parts of the city.
Sadly, Rizzi passed away in 2011, but the Happy Rizzi House, which is surely his greatest work, ensures that his offbeat vision will live on for years to come.
A must see and visit place.
