The Rhine Falls (Rheinfall in German), also known as Schaffhausen Falls, are the largest waterfalls in Europe.
They are located in the upper reaches of the Rhine River in Neuhausen am Rheinfall, not far from the city of Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland near the German border. The waterfalls have a width of 150 metres and a height of 23 metres, the basin has a depth of 23 metres with an average water flow rate of 750 m³/s, in summer 600 m³/s and in winter 250 m³/s. The maximum water flow was 1250 m³/s in 1965 and the minimum water flow was 95 m³/s in 1921.
After the waterfall, on the Schaffhausen side of the Rhine is Wörth House, which houses a restaurant and a shop. From there, small boats leave for the waterfall where the border between Schaffhausen and Canton Zurich is located and on the Zurich side, where Laufen Castle, which houses a restaurant, shop and hostel, is located.
