The Regional Archaeological Museum of Aosta has many archaeological finds found throughout the Aosta Valley which are arranged in chronological order.
Prehistory
The prehistoric finds consist of funerary ornaments, glass, terracotta vases and sculpted anthropomorphic stelae, and this collection will be housed in the future in the museum that will be built on the megalithic area of Saint-Martin-de-Corléans.
The Romans
The museum has a wide range of exhibits from Roman times. There are funeral objects, glass objects (plates, glasses…), pieces of statues, objects from the theatre, cutlery and common games.
The model of Augusta Praetoria
In the museum there is also a model of the Roman city of Augusta Praetoria rebuilt based on the remains of Roman buildings visible throughout Aosta.
In the basement of the Regional Archaeological Museum are preserved the remains of the south-west corner of the eastern tower of the Porta Principalis Sinistra, one of the four city gates of Augusta Prætoria, with the Roman plans and the only part of the embankment, with its counter-shoe wall, still leaning against a section of the Roman walls.
The Museum also houses the prestigious numismatic collection "Pautasso", an exhibition of coins from the Greek age to the Savoy period. Important is the nucleus of Celtic, Gallic and Padana coins.
