Caves of Castellana
Located about 40 km from Bari, the Caves of Castellana were known since ancient times, although the ancients knew and used only the first part, called the Grave, and attributed to the cave legends related to magic and devils. The Caves are a complex of underground cavities of karstic origin. A first attempt at exploration was made at the end of the eighteenth century by some young people of the place, but they stopped a few meters after the majestic entrance. The discovery of the entire system of abysses and cavities that make up the complex dates back to 23 January 1938 by speleologist Franco Anelli as part of a speleological research campaign conducted in the south-eastern Murge at the invitation of the provincial tourism board of Bari.
The complete visit of the cave, which extends for about 3 km, lasts more than two hours, but it is possible to make a short one, lasting about 50 minutes.
