Castello del Principe is located in the upper part of Belvedere Marittimo. It was built perhaps by the Normans" of Roger D’Altavilla during the eleventh century, probably on the remains of a Byzantine building, was then rebuilt in Angevin times by Ruggiero da Sangineto (1287), was restored and modified by Ferdinand I of Aragon in 1490 and is still one of the best fortifications in Calabria. The fortification, in "calcareous stone just hewn with terracotta inzeppature", has the typological characteristics of the Angevins and Aragonese. The east tower with Angevin type shoes is cut off and equipped with merlons to adapt to gunpowder, while the west tower has ogival spikes; on the door there is a rectangular stone with an epigraph supported by 2 putti with Aragonese royal weapons. The fortification is called "Castello del Principe" because of the various feudal lords who succeeded one another in the territories of Belvedere and Sangineto and who transformed its use into a residence.
