All tourists know the Golden Lane, a street once inhabited by goldsmiths and, according to city legends, by alchemists, scientists or sorcerers capable of transforming the less precious metals into pure gold. The Vicolo d’Oro (Golden Lane) is located northeast of the charming Castle and preserves the original houses and shops of the sixteenth century. The New World is a discovery that will leave you speechless. Unlike the Vicolo d’Oro it is less touristy but just as picturesque. Prague is the right city where you can get lost and wander aimlessly. The small lanes and dimly lit streets seem almost inviting you to get lost, and the small New World district is perhaps one of the most beautiful examples. From Hradčanské náměstí (Hradčany Square), head towards Kanovnická; from Loretánské náměstí, take Kapucínská: the little alleys of the New World are there, impossible to miss. This area is a district in itself, unique for its small, picturesque hovels. At that time only a small suburb of Hradčany was mentioned for the first time in the year 1350 and soon it was integrated into the city’s fortifications. Once, these small houses with very special windows housed the families of the castle workers.
We are in the Hradcany district and you can admire a series of houses built for the poorest inhabitants of Prague in the 14th century.
You will be amazed.
