The Powder Tower is rightly considered one of Merano’s most popular tourist attractions! This tower owes its name to the fact that the city fathers of Merano, worried about the large amount of gunpowder stored in the city during the Thirty Years’ War, had stored it in the keep of Ortenstein Castle. The castle was demolished, the tower fortunately not!
The old tower, 28 meters high, into which a modern staircase was mounted, is now used as a viewing terrace. A sunny and privileged location on a rock just above the parish church.
The view extends from the Etsch Valley plain to the highest peaks of the Texel group. The Powder Tower is rightly regarded as one of Merano’s most popular attractions!
